History Shotokan

Today, karate is a martial art that not only are trained in Japan, but worldwide.
Before Gichin Funakoshi Karate was only a regional artform on the island of Okinawa.

In May 1922,traveled Gichin Funakoshi to Tokyo to attend the first Budo and Mental educational presentation sponsored by the Ministry of Education, to showcase the Okinawan art of self defense "Karate".

In 1936 some of Gichin Funakoshi's supporters manage to raise enough money to build the first independent karate dojo in Japan. It was students of Funakoshi who gave dojo name Shoto-kan.
Shoto means "pinetree waves) and was the stage name Funakoshi used to sign his calligraphy with.
Kan means building.
Gichin Funakoshi's karatestyle is now known throughout the world as Shotokan and is today the most common style of all.
