JKS History

One of the longest running Shotokan organizations are Japan Karate Association (JKA). It was this organization that spread Shotokan karate around the world. Much has been written so much abou tthis great Karate organization that we do not need to go deeper withit.

After the legendary JKA Chief Instructor Masatoshi Nakayama Sensei's death came in 1990 to spilled in JKA. Before his death, h eNakayama Sensei chose Tetshiko Asa iSensei(then JKA Technical Director) to succeed as the new chief instructor.

Unfortunately it came to internal strife of politicaland personal reasons, and hence to a sharing of JKA-(a JKA Nakahara fraction & a JKA Asai fraction). Both groups continued to trainin JKA's Honbu Dojo. Both group salso used the dojo for their own instructor trainings, however, shared in each half, which were divided by an invisible wall. This continued until 1991 when both groups established each newDojo. Both groups continued to call themselves JKA.

Then started a 10-year legal battle over the name JKA. In 1999, after many appeals, decided Asai fraction to accept
the loss and to withdraw from the legal battle.
In April 2000, the JKA (Asai fraction) change name to the Japan Karate Shoto kai (JKS). Since there was already a world organization named Shotokai, the organization decided to change its name to
Japan Karate Shoto Federation (JKS)

Japan Karate Shoto Federation (Honbu Dojo instructors 2002)
